Green packaging solutions do not have to be limited for small businesses or difficult and expensive to customize for large retailers.

While single-use plastics can often seem to be the easiest and most accessible solution, material sciences have made great strides in the development of environmentally friendly packaging.

Uniting the knowledge, perspectives, and ideas of different countries can exponentially speed up innovation in any field. While Thailand has been standing out for its leading education in the Science Fields, Germany holds the reigns in infrastructure thanks to their continued investments in sustainable product research and development.

Development on silk fibroin-based biomaterials for tissue engineering applications

The present dissertation was proposed two possible approaches to develop silk fibroin-based biomaterials in the context of tissue engineering, i.e. (i) enhancement of the biological and physical functions of silk fibroin by blending/incorporating chitin derivatives, and (ii) the use of silk fibroin as a carrier matrix to delivery the bioactive agents. In case of (i), biodegradation of silk fibroin was greatly improved by blending with carboxymethyl chitin (CM-chitin). The biodegradability of the blends increased with increasing the CM-chitin contents. The incorporating chitin whiskers into the silk fibroin matrix not only promoted the dimensional stability but also enhanced in its mechanical properties. For (ii), the study was conducted both in vitro and in vivo using dyes and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) as low-and high-molecular weight model drugs, respectively. The results indicate that the silk fibroin proteins were amphiphilic-charged materials depending on the existing pH. The strong interaction was observed, when the charge of model drugs and silk fibroin were opposite. The in vivo study demonstrated that the use of silk fibroin scaffolds as the carrier matrix enabled to control in vivo release of bFGF in the sustainable fashion.

Preparation and Characterization of Microwave-treated Carboxymethyl Chitin and Carboxymethyl Chitosan Films for Potential Use in Wound Care Application

CM-chitin and CM-chitosan films were successfully crosslinked by microwave treatment. Crosslinking of the microwave-treated CM-chitin films involved mainly the carboxylate and the secondary alcohol groups, while crosslinking of microwave-treated CM-chitosan films involved the carboxylate and the amino groups. In addition, the crystallinity of CM-chitin increased with increasing microwave treatment time, whereas an increase in the crystallinity of the microwave-treated CM-chitosan films was not observed. At a similar percentage of weight loss, the crosslinking of either CM-chitin or CM-chitosan films by microwave treatment required much less stringent condition when compared with the crosslinking by autoclave treatment. Based on both direct and indirect cytotoxicity assays, the cytotoxicity of the microwave-treated CM-chitin films was negative, while that of the microwave-treated CM-chitosan films was positive. Human fibroblasts adhered on the surface of microwave-treated CM-chitosan films much better than on the surface of microwave-treated CM-chitin films.

  1. Choose the right materials
    1. As flexible packaging developers, we're at a pivotal point, transitioning from non-recyclable multimaterials to recyclable monomaterials. This significant shift necessitates a gradual adaptation throughout the entire supply chain to a new, sustainable ecosystem. It's crucial to gain a deep understanding of innovative materials that are newly applied in specific segments to effectively meet the evolving demands of customers. Collaborating closely with material suppliers and machinery manufacturers is essential, as it enables us to enhance the capabilities of existing systems to integrate these advanced, eco-friendly materials.
    2. When selecting packaging materials, cost and performance are paramount. The performance of materials affects three key areas:
      1. during conversion into packaging,
      2. while on the shelf, and
      3. throughout the recycling process.
    3. It's crucial to understand that costs extend beyond just the unit price; performance during conversion, including any additional steps required, can significantly impact overall expenses. Materials that do not meet standard conversion speeds, for instance, may reduce productivity and increase costs. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of materials should consider these hidden costs to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  2. Label your packaging clearly
    1. One crucial step for brand owners transitioning to sustainable flexible packaging is to clearly communicate its environmental benefits on the label. Especially now, as traditional and sustainable flexible packaging options coexist on shelves, it’s vital to make the sustainable choices stand out. For instance, when a flexible plastic stand-up pouch shifts from a multimaterial to a monomaterial design, its appearance may remain similar. It is essential to prominently display the correct recyclability symbols, helping consumers distinguish these options and manage them properly after use.
  3. Test your packaging performance
    1. One of the key challenges in developing sustainable flexible packaging—aimed at replacing traditional options—is ensuring no compromise on the essential function of shelf life.

Barrier properties are crucial indicators for comparing traditional packaging with new, sustainable alternatives. These properties often vary under different testing conditions, highlighting the need for comprehensive understanding across all development stages. From gathering customer insights to technical execution, maintaining clear communication is vital. This not only aligns expectations but also prevents potential miscommunications, ensuring the successful development of sustainable packaging.

  4. Here’s what else to consider
    1. In the realm of sustainable flexible packaging, BOBST highlights three crucial pillars:
      1. monomaterial structures composed of either PE or PP;
      2. paper-based materials; and
      3. compostable packaging that breaks down in home or industrial settings.
    2. To truly innovate and tailor our packaging designs, selecting the appropriate sustainability pillar based on explicit customer needs is essential. Engaging customers early in the design process helps ensure that their requirements guide the choice of materials and the overall packaging strategy.
    3. An essential aspect of advancing sustainable flexible packaging is the robust collaboration between machine manufacturers and resin suppliers. In the early stages of developing full PE structures for flexible packaging, the industry sought printable films with high heat resistance as alternatives to BOPET or BOPA films. Thanks to the diligent efforts between machine manufacturers and resin suppliers, a significant portion of the full PE structure has been launched in recent years. This close collaboration has become a standard practice among value chain participants, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable packaging solutions.
